Charlton manager Nathan Jones says his side are not yet the finished article after his side beat ten-men Peterborough 2-1.

A late goal by Macaulay Gillesphey undid the visitors, who saw Emmanuel Fernandez dismissed.

Victory – the Addicks’ fifth in the last six games – puts the south-east London outfit in fifth spot in League One.

While the momentum is with his side, Jones reckons that there is still much more work needed.

He said: “We’re a constant work in progress. We’re nowhere near the finished article, but we know where we want to be.

“We can still be more fluid, still convert more chances, to create more quality, it’s constant work in progress.

“We’re in a really good, realistic place for where we’ve come from, and we have to keep building that.

“You have that mentality of wanting to keep going, to have the fitness levels and energy, and that little bit of quality.

“I think the referee got all the big decisions right tonight, it’s definitely a penalty for us, definitely a penalty for them and it’s a red card.”

Although Luke Berry hit the post, it was a non-descript first half where Charlton were generally the better side.

The game kicked into life in an amazing eight minute spell. After increased home pressure, the visitors were undone by a 54th-minute penalty. Sam Hughes handled in the box, with Matty Godden converting from the spot.

It looked to become an awful evening for Peterborough when Fernandez was dismissed after 58 minutes after fouling Thierry Small.

However, they hit back three minutes later from a Malik Mothersille spot-kick after Ricky-Jade Jones was upended in the area by Kayne Ramsay.

The Peterborough resolve was finally broken when Gillesphey headed home an 88th-minute corner.

The visitors are still without an away league win since August, and are three points off the relegation zone.

Manager Darren Ferguson was deflated after a late loss, but believed Ramsay should have also seen red.

He said: “I’m really gutted for the players, they didn’t deserve that. They put everything into the game, I can’t have asked for any more in terms of the effort and endeavour.

“Especially with the resilience we showed when we went a goal down and with 10 men.

“But the turning point is the referee’s decision on the penalty we got. It’s a blatant red card, everyone in the stadium says it’s a red card. The referee says he played the ball – he’s taken him clean out.

“It would have been 10 against 10, of course the game could have been different.

“But even when we were down to 10 and we equalised, they didn’t really trouble us too many times.”
